Why we measure your paint before we polish it

Clear coat is thinner than a sheet of paper, and you only get to cut it once.

Factory clear coat runs somewhere between 40 and 60 microns. A sheet of printer paper is about 100.

Every correction removes some of it. Do that enough times, or once too aggressively, and you are through to the base coat โ€” which is a respray, not a polish.

So we read the panel first. If a car has been resprayed, or a previous shop has already cut it hard, the gauge tells us before the machine does. Sometimes the honest answer is that a panel gets one careful pass instead of two.
